Chapter 17
(Anna) 6.49am And we’re off!
In Jan’s own words: “There he is, our WONDERBOY!”
You can’t imagine the level of excitement on gTalk when MCM came online. We started discussing chocolate flowers and ponies and – okay, I lie. Well, we did mention chocolate flowers, but it was in a slightly different context relating to Twitter. Speaking of, are you going to help us reach over 2,000 #3d1d tweets today?
So, I think MCM’s running a little bit behind schedule at the moment, but give him a break, it’s ridiculously early where he is. After all, mornings were never meant to be seen, and that’s a fact. And with that out of the way, here be the notes:
17. The Fool
Redux caught in the rain, running into a coffee shop.
Calls Sabina, tells her where to find him, says he’ll be
waiting. Put a cover on the stroller.
Waitress arrives, and it’s Rache. She takes his order as if
she doesn’t know him, which irks him. He watches Kana
Choi reading the news, talking about America’s new
investment in space enforcement. Chromoco profits etc. He
laughs, and Rache sits down across from him, coffee in
hand.
Something funny about Chromoco? She asks, then
softens. Just a joke. How is stuff? Did she hear something
about a stroller? How’s life?
He explains about the baby, about how work is going
really well. Glad to see she’d doing better. Does she have
family here? They must be glad that she’s better.
She says her family is back in CITY, that she’s working
her way through school again. Political science. Good
choice he says. The world can use some passion.
He reaches for money, but she says no, it’s on the house.
He gives her a big tip anyway, says she deserves it for turning
her life around. It’s not easy, but she’s doing it. It’s an
investment in the future… maybe she can become powerful
enough to fix the imbalances she was so upset about.
Her expression changes, and she says she hasn’t given up
on that yet. In fact… she’s been looking into ways of fixing
things faster. Redux gets tense. How so? Well… she knows
someone who might be able to get her a space fighter. She
could become a dustrunner…
Redux blanches, gets up quickly, takes the money back,
and storms out, calling her a fool.
And the questions for this chapter were:
A dessert. A town in Québec. Two professions.
And the answers picked were: tiramisu! by @cajeck, Sillery by @merrileefaber, and two Professions: Worm dung farming and film producing by @cajeck. Where the first two were used quite obvious, but maybe I’m stupid: where did the professions come in to it?
I enjoyed this chapter. It’s nice to see Rache again, and also there was the mysterious “Harte” character whose name was strangely familiar. Also, I don’t know whether this is a stupid idea, but is anyone starting to see similarities between Rache and Stacey?
(Eli) 7:05 am – there you go, the chapter he ‘cared about’. And what a chapter that is! I loved the double meaning at the end, when Yuri gets angry at the girl, where – I think, and Anna agrees with me – he’s really talking about himself. That anger implies that he has something to be bitter about. It implies that he doesn’t like piracy. And it implies that he once had a future. My heart breaks for Yuri, it does.
(Jan) 7.12 am – Yay for Rache and Yuri!! This man is quickly becoming my favorite character. It all seems so sad… I have to admit, I’m slightly confused with the date switches sometimes, because when you are reading this fast, and with this few hours of sleep, dates don’t register. It helped that little Anya was so little here, to put things in perspective. Do piercing holes dissappear? I’m with Anna and Eli that he’s angry because he’s not happy with his own piracy ways. (I have to admit, when they were discussing it as ‘he’s talking about himself’, I got confused and thought they were talking about MCM, which made me wonder if he just had a baby or something like that. Luckily, confusion cleared out…).
As for Rache being Stacey, I don’t think so, I picture Stacey younger then Rache, and even though Rache is a fool, don’t see how she could end up with the Italian Mob. Stacey seemed more clueless than Rache too, though that might have been because she was scared shitless. Also, because all this seemed so sad, I am convinced Rache will die dramatically, and poor Yuri will try to save her to no avail. Any other plot ideas out there?

Comments
The story is such a great read and the tweets have added a wonderful fun dimension – is this the future?
Such a shame about the banners – pity us writers are poorly paid or in my case, not paid at all! lol
I’m wondering more about the people who don’t have Twitter. How are they finding this experiment so far? Interesting, ae?
Do you think any non-twitter-ers are following this?
I don’t know, and that’s what interests me. Twitter can be a closed ecosystem – there are plenty of people out there (e.g.: me on a normal day) who won’t bother to check, and who won’t know.
